"Not My Idea"


Taking a brief diversion from The Discovery of the Child today to highlight the work of Anastasia Higginbotham. Anastasia's series, "Terrible Ordinary Things" addresses the every-day challenges that children face.

Every day, children face racism. White children included, even though white culture rarely talks about it.

If you are trying to learn how to talk to white children about racism, "Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness" might help. Here's a short video about why Anastasia wrote the book and what she hopes it might accomplish:

Then, make a little more time to watch this video, from the Rosindale Branch of the Boston Public Library. Celeste Bocchicchio-Chaudhri reads the full book aloud, but she also answers children's questions and offers a very strong historical context for the reading.
